Road Department

The Road Department maintains township roads and drainage, and handles snow and ice operations each winter.

The Road Department is located at 36 E. South Street, Lithopolis, OH 43136. Call (614) 837-1968 or email roaddepartment@bloomtwp.org to report a road or drainage concern.

Mailbox snow-damage policy

During ice and snow events, the Road Department’s first responsibility is the safety of the traveling public. Wet, heavy snow often has to be cleared at speed to move the slush off the road surface.

If a plow physically strikes and damages a mailbox, the township will repair or replace it, making a reasonable effort to match an in-kind mailbox of usual and customary construction and design.

If the force of plowed snow knocks a mailbox down, crews will attempt repairs once the snow event is over and roads are clear — which may mean temporarily securing the post or box so mail service can continue. Mailboxes that are not securely mounted, or that are built of poor-quality materials, cannot be the township’s responsibility. Each complaint is reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Crews log the address and time of damage they observe, but may not see every occurrence. Residents should call (614) 837-1968 to report mailbox damage. Repairs begin as soon as the roads are safe for travel, to keep any interruption of mail delivery to a minimum.

Mailbox right-of-way policy

Mailbox supports must comply with the current ODOT Design Manual, and rural mailbox supports must be of the “breakaway” type.
